Satin vs Velvet Clutch Wholesale: Choosing Evening Bag Fabrics
Published: September 5, 2026 | 7 min read
Satin and velvet are the two workhorse fabrics of the occasion clutch — and they behave completely differently in production, retail display, and returns. Choosing wrong costs you either margin (over-paying for velvet where satin sells) or reputation (satin where the customer expected velvet's depth). Here is how the two fabrics compare on the numbers that matter to a buyer.
Satin vs Velvet: The Buyer's Table
| Criterion | Satin Clutch | Velvet Clutch |
|---|---|---|
| FOB cost (envelope clutch) | $5-9 | $7-12 |
| MOQ (stock / custom color) | 200 / 300+ | 300 / 500+ |
| Color range | Wide, glossy, photographs light | Deep jewel tones, matte depth |
| Durability in-store | Snags show; handle with care | Crush marks need steaming |
| Season | Spring-summer weddings, prom | Fall-winter galas, holiday |
| Return risk | Color mismatch in daylight | Crushed pile in transit |
When to Buy Satin
- Bridal and prom programs: ivory and pastel satin dominates spring occasions.
- Price-led assortments: satin hits lower price points at the same silhouette.
- Printed or embroidered trims: satin's smooth face takes beading and monograms cleanly.
When to Buy Velvet
- Q4 holiday and gala assortments: emerald, burgundy and navy velvet sell from October to February.
- Premium positioning: velvet reads "expensive" at first touch — justify a 15-25% retail uplift.
- Structured minaudières: velvet over a hard board body keeps the luxury look with box-clutch structure.
Both fabrics can be produced in the same factory line; for capability and MOQ terms see the custom clutch bag manufacturer page and the clutch wholesale overview.
Specifying Fabric in the PO
- Satin: state weave type (duchesse or crepe-back), weight in g/m², and finish. Duchesse satin holds structure for boxy clutches.
- Velvet: state pile fiber (cotton, silk-blend or polyester) and pile density. Polyester velvet crushes less in shipping.
- Dye lots: single dye lot per order for both fabrics — batch differences are visible under store lighting.
- Lining: request satin lining even on velvet bodies; it signals quality at open-clutch moments.
For inspection standards that apply to both fabrics, see the AQL 2.5 inspection guide.
First Order Suggestion
- Split test: 2 satin styles + 2 velvet styles × 150 pieces, timed 8 weeks before your peak season.
- Reorder signal: whichever fabric sells through 60% in 6 weeks becomes next season's anchor.
- Sampling: 5-7 days per style; fabric swatches first, always in daylight.
